Kevin Ryan enjoyed a stellar weekend with success in the John & Judith Marshall Memorial Stakes for Bergerac adding to triumph in the Sprint Cup at Haydock just under 24 hours earlier at Haydock.

He detected this race as a perfect opportunity for the consistent 3 year old son of Kodi Bear to notch up another win for the season after a string of seconds, most recently at Doncaster, under Kevin Stott for owner Mrs Angie Bailey.
In a blanket finish to this six furlong contest, the first 5 home were separated by less than a length, with the eventual winner prevailing by half a length to the 25/1 priced pair of Ava Go Joe and Internationaldream.
On leaving the stalls Bergerac did stumble slightly, but was up front at the head of the field with Internationaldream and Cottam Lane for company, First Folio settling just in behind him.
First Folio eyeballed the leader with just over a furlong to go, and at the furlong marker there were at least 7 in line all giving everything in full cry. On the near side was Ava Go Joe, followed towards the far side by Ey Up It’s Maggie, First Edition, Cottam Lane, Internationaldream, Bergerac and First Folio, all in a handicapper’s dream as the line drew closer.

In the last half a furlong Bergerac found extra and pulled ahead, giving everything for his jockey’s urgings and notching up his trainer’s third win in the race in the last 5 years.
Kevin Stott, speaking to Racing TV shortly after, was full of praise for his “tough” mount.
“He battles very well. When they came at me I thought they were going to swallow me but to be fair he stuck his head out”.
“He might just have been headed but he came back again”.
“I couldn’t pull him up, which is always a good sign!”
Referring to the trainer Kevin Ryan and his success the day earlier in the Sprint Cup, he added “yesterday was brilliant for Kevin, he’s doing everything right with the horses, and the yard is happy and in great form”.
The consistency of Bergerac is notable, as he has only finished out of the first three once in his 9 starts, which was at Chester last season. He is fast becoming a horse that anyone would love to have, both as an owner and a doting stable hand.
There was asting in the tail for the rider of third placed Internationaldream, Paul Hanagan. He was hit with a 2 day ban by the stewards for using his whip above the permitted level from 1 and a half furlongs out.
Mistrix made it third time lucky when taking the Coopers Marquees British EBF Future Stayers’ Novice Stakes under Daniel Muscutt for trainer George Scott.

The daughter of Vadamos gained her first success after two second places on her two previous starts at Doncaster and Salisbury, both of which were no more than a neck behind the winner of those races.
At the break Boondoggle took the field along from Flash The Dash and Mister Camacho. Mistrix was settled in behind with the favourite Just Wonder and treble seeking Tom Marquand.
Inside the last quarter of a mile Mister Camacho was first off the bit, Joanna Masonpushing and shoving along, with her mount seemingly not being able to pick up when asked. Just Wonder was also being scrubbed along and looking for a way forward, whilst the two early leaders were also playing their cards.
The eye was drawn however to the strongly travelling Mistrix on the near side, the jockey looking full of confidence as they came into the contest on the snaff. Wwn the button was pressed Mistrix went to the lead with good style. Flash The Dash responded however and made the new leader work for it, the pair drawing clear of their rivals. Mistrix however pulled out more and was always looking on top as she scored by half a length, in a somewhat cosy fashion, to her relentless and brave challenger.

To his credit Mister Camacho stayed on for third, responding to his jockeys urgings and shaping as if going up in trip would be right up his street. The favourite Just Wonder could not get going and finished last of the quintet.
Master Milliner relished the return to two miles as he scored for trainer Emma Lavelle and jockey Hector Crouch in the Little Green Rascals Childrens’ Nurseries Stakes for owner Mrs Jennifer Simpson Racing.

A 13/2 shout at the off, he returned to winning ways after several unlucky, and somewhat unsuitable, runs at 1m 6f, utilising his stamina to hold of Nataleena by two lengths.
Golden Arch was slow away at the start, while Alpine Stroll and Gift Of Raaj took the field along as they went past the stands and headed off in the back straight of the Knavesmire.
The pace was a steady one, not frenetic or blistering, but Battle Angel was running a little keenly on the far side, taking a pull in the arms of Kevin Stott.
Swinging into the home straight Alpine Stroll was pushed along by Silverstre de Sousa to go on and win the race, but Gift Of Raaj, Nataleena and Master Milliner had come through and surpassed them, with the latter going on by half a length as the field went towards the final furlong. He stayed on well all the way to the line, relishing every step of the trip, and kept on well to score by two lengths to Nataleena. Gold Arch absolutely flew on the outside to take third, with Bollin Neil also staying on to take fourth under Ella McCain.

Post race, Battle Angel’s connections, Ursa Major Racing, reported to us that she will next be seen in a juvenile hurdle somewhere, and that she ran too free in the race and was sensibly looked after by jockey Kevin Stott once her chance had gone.
Shane Kelly reported that his mount, Gold Arch, took a false step around two furlongs out, and when examined by the vets afterwards, the gelding was found to be lame on their left fore and right hind legs.

Emaraty Hero followed up his success at Musselburgh nearly two weeks earlier with a fine victory in the Yorkshire Regiment Apprentice Stakes under Pierre-Louis Jamin for trainer Grant Tuer and owners NG Racing.

The 11/8 Favourite stayed on strongly to repel all challengers by 3 and a half lengths under a well judged ride from his enterprising young jockey, defying a 6lb rise in the weights for his success at Musselburgh.
Pearl Warrior took the field along at the start, with Emaraty Hero in behind in second place. Pearl Warrior had been beaten by Emaraty Hero at Musselburgh, and was looking to turn the table on their conqueror under Billy Garritty.
In a steadily run first half of the race, there were no concerns as the field swung into the straight and began the charge for home. Topanticipation scythed his way through the field to run into a challenging position, whilst Emaraty Hero looked menacing on the near side as the pace lifted and the field charged towards the last three furlongs.
Pearl Warrior dropped away tamely once their chance had gone, with both Topanticipation and Emaraty Hero eyeballed each other and settled down to slug it out towards the line. Despite all his brave, tenacious effort, Topanticipation could not surpass and overhaul Emaraty Hero, and the latter simply powered away with his lengthy stride to score by over 3 lengths, in a fashion that screamed of the potential of more coming if the gelding goes up in trip.

He will presumably go up another 6 pounds for this success, but the sky may well appear to be the limit for this son of Lope De Vega. Only time will tell how far he travels.
Following the race, Iain Jardine was asked regarding the performance of his charge Pearl Warrior, following their eighth placed finish out of nine runners. He could not explain the run of the gelding, and there were no abnormalities reported to or by the vets.
