Buick enjoys terrific treble on golden day at Ascot

To win one race at a meeting, you would consider it a good day at the office. Particularly if your office goes 45 miles per hour and has the opportunity to dump you randomly if the mood takes them. Ask title rival Oisin Murphy at Royal Ascot.

A double, and you feel pretty lucky. But a treble would be a glorious day in the office, one you remember in the dark days of injury of a lapse in form. Now consider that the last of those wins is the biggest race of the day, and one of the biggest so far. A Group 1 at Ascot.

Well, for William Buick, he knows exactly how that feels after a 53/1 treble at Ascot kept the pressure on his title rival Oisin Murphy and took him over the £1million in earnings for the season so far.

Adayar was the highlight for him, his reaction evident when saluting the assembled crowd at Ascot with a bellow as his mount followed up from his success 7 weeks earlier in the Derby with victory in the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Racing in second for the majority of the race, he quickened up when asked for his effort and dourly fended off the relentless assaults of Mishriff and Love, who despite their best efforts could not strike a blow.

Science shows method to victory in Pat Eddery Stakes

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. And as per a scientist devising an experiment, success at Ascot on Saturday was a case of second time lucky for New Science as he took the opener of the day under William Buick for trainer Charlie Appleby and Godolphin.

Sent off at 2/1F after a seventh place in the Chesham Stakes behind Point Lonsdale at Royal Ascot last month, in which the gelding was unsuited by the heavy going, the return to faster ground was more than a catalyst for a restoration to form, getting up late on inside the final 150 yards to score by around a length from Angel Bleu and Frankie Dettori.

Mr McCann had set off early on to lead, with the favourite slightly keen behind, but not as much as Angel Bleu, who took a keen hold, his rider pulling hard to settle him. Nurseclaire and Danny Tudhope were keen to sit in behind and view proceedings from the rear of the field, and this was the case until around 1 and a half furlongs out, where the race quickly turned into a sprint.

Angel Bleu took the lead and looked booked for victory, only for William Buick and the market leader to wear him down and steal victory from him in the last 150 yards, staying on well to win a shade cosily.

After the race, trainer Charlie Appleby, isolating at home after being pinged earlier in the week, was clear that not only was his charge “the class horse in the field”, but that he would be kept well away from soft ground, as his run in the Chesham was all down to him not being able to perform on the heavy going that day.

On future plans concerning which race he will be seen in next, the trainer pointed out that the Lope De Vega gelding would perhaps be heading for the Solario Stakes at Sandown on August 21st.

Perennial bridesmaid Danyah finally gets their big day

After threatening on his last 3 runs to deliver a big pot, Danyah finally got his head in front at the business end of a race when taking the Moet & Chandon International Stakes at Ascot under William Buick for trainer Owen Burrows and owners Shadwell Estate Company Ltd.

Form figures of 422 this season, representing a fourth in the Lincoln behind Haqeeqy, and two seconds, the former in the Spring Cup at Newbury and the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot saw him put to the top of the betting for the seven furlong contest as the 9/2 favourite.

Always prominent in the group heading down the centre of the track, he grimly held on at the line under William Buick, holding on by a short head to Star Of Orion and Dance Fever, who were flashing home on the nearside rail.

After the race, trainer Owen Burrows stated that tactically it hadn’t gone to plan, with William forced to cut out the running due to no pace being around him to suit his stye of racing.

“He toughed it out well”.

He also made comment on the fact that the winner would be raised to over 110, but in their view “Listed and Group races aren’t run to suit” ( Danyah ), so they will ultimately “wait and see” on future plans.
